Are You Ready for the New Truck Emissions?

At last month’s NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, one topic of conversation revolved around the upcoming new emission requirements for diesel trucks. In calendar year 2027/model year 2028, the EPA emission standards will meet California’s strict standards.
The effect will be similar to 2007 and 2010. While numbers have not been released, we’ve heard from our chassis manufacturers to expect up to a $20,000 increase on medium duty trucks and $50,000 on heavy duty trucks. Even if the numbers wind up being half that, the unknown cost of new emission controls on your truck can be hard to plan around.
In response to the potential increased costs, manufacturers have been warned that CY2026/MY2027 will be a pre-buy year which means there’s going to be a significant up-tick in demand across the board so availability of trucks will be limited.
If you had thoughts of replacing or updating a portion of your fleet in the coming years, it’s advisable to start considering it sooner rather than later.
